Joseph Kennedy was born abt. 1847 in Carbonear, Newfoundland and is buried in Rollo Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He married Jane Kennedy born abt. 1853 in Carbonear, Newfoundland. After Joe died Jane emigrated to Boston, remarried by the name of Cleary and is buried Massachusetts. Joseph and Jane Kennedy (that was her maiden name as well) were married St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Parish in Carbonear, Newfoundland near Harbor Grace on November 15, 1871. They later emigrated to PEI appearing there on the 1881 Canadian Census; they may have been in St. John's for the birth of their last two children. Joe Kennedy is said to have had a brother Edward Kennedy and the two seamen according to one descendant were "runners."

The births of Fanny and Julia are not complete found at St. Pat's. The family was somewhere else in Newfoundland between 1874 and 1881 the Canadian census says Newfoundland for their birth place.
