"In 1753, Mary Clarke, Timothy O'Keefe, Thomas Kennedy and Edward McCarthy of Placentia were issued licences to keep public houses and at St. John's William Murphy was serving as assistant constable.  At Harbour Grace, Felix McCarthy had two ships- The Shamrock and Francis & Elizabeth- and his own fishing crew.  As well, he served as agent for several English firms in carrying on their business in Newfoundland." p. 13
