KENNEDY

When I first started looking for the ship which brought my ggg grandfather Nicholas Kennedy from Wexford to Newfoundland I knew that it would be difficult.  Finding a "ship's passenger list"  dating 1807  is not just difficult but often impossible.  If a list were kept it might only be published in a local newspaper as part of the "Shipping News" section.  Initially disappointed I continued to search and soon realized  a fortune.  As Irish luck would have it I  found my ancestors by virtue of their being Sea Captains.  I did not find my ggg grandfather on a passenger list because he was born at sea.   His parents were Captain Nicholas Kennedy & Grace Young of Wexford, Ireland.   My ancestors were not so much boarding ships as they were sailing them. Captains in their own right this seafaring family sailed out of Ireland in windjammers bound for the other side of the Atlantic.  They were not passengers they were mariners.  They sailed from Rosslare in the winter of 1807 in a windjammer.  This is their history and that of  thousands of their descendants many still in Newfoundland and others spread far and wide from sea to shining sea.

CAPTAIN'S LOG The Mariner Kennedys of Newfoundland. While this list contains only the names of Newfoundland Kennedys that were Captains, skippers, or master mariners you can imagine how large the index would be if it contained the names of all Newfoundland Kennedys who were sailors, coopers, ships joiners, fishermen, weavers and all those whose livelihood came from the Sea.
