Sr. Mary Luke Hayden, 87, a Sister of Saint Martha, of Bethany Motherhouse, died
at St. Martha's Hospital on Wednesday, April 25, 2001. She had been in hospital
for a short period of time. Born in St. John's, Nfld., and baptized Mary Rita,
she was the second oldest in a family of five girls, and the daughter of the
late Luke Joseph Hayden and Julia Agatha (Kennedy) Hayden. Sr. Mary Luke entered
the Sisters of Saint Martha Sept. 8, 1935. She was trained in piano and she
continued to develop and upgrade this art and skill over the years. In 1939, she
obtained her RN from St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, N.S. Sr. Mary Luke served
in the nursing field for 19 years in the east and west: St. Joseph's, Glace Bay,
N.S., St. Michael's Broadview, Saskatchewan, St. Mary's, Inverness, and St.
Rita, Sydney, N.S. In May 1956, she was unable to remain in nursing due to
illness. Subsequently, she served in various ministries at Little Flower
Institute, Sydney, St. Paul's Convent, St. Peter's, New Waterford Consolidated
Hospital, and St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, N.S. From 1978-89, she performed
clerical work at St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish. Sr. Luke retired to Bethany
in 1989. She was the last surviving member of her family and was predeceased by
four sisters, Elizabeth Clattenburg, Grace Finn, Margaret Davis and Paula. The
remains will rest at Bethany after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29 where a
celebration of Vigil will be held. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held
Monday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Arrangements are under the
direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish
