Captain Nicholas KENNEDY (II) was born at sea
in 1807 to
Captain Nicholas Kennedy and wife Grace Young during a rough winters crossing of
the North Atlantic. They and a second Kennedy
windjammer were en route to New Bedford, Massachusetts having sailed out of Rosslare Harbor in the County of
Wexford, Ireland. Captain Nicholas Kennedy (I) felt
compelled to put in at the nearest port for the safety of his wife and newborn
son and made his way to Harbour Grace in Conception Bay, Newfoundland.
Nicholas was baptized May 29, 1807 at Harbour Grace Roman Catholic Chapel.
The sponsors were Philip MURPHY and Frances Kennedy (posssibly a sister of Nicholas (I) who also made
the journey from
Wexford). Nicholas grew to become a Captain himself working the seal and cod fishery
and on Febrauary 8, 1831 he married Julia Kennedy the daughter of Terrence
Kennedy and Mary Clarke of Crocker's Cove. Nicholas and Julia lived
in Crocker's Cove and had 7 children (5 that survived childhood) Mary 1833,
Grace 1836, John 1839, Terrence 1845, and Nicholas 1848. The 3
brothers were all Captains in Newfoundland and died in Newfoundland.
Nicholas born in 1807 lived to 74 years of age and died April 2, 1881 and is buried in
the Roman Catholic Cemetery in North West Carbonear.
Captain Nicholas Kennedy and Grace Young of Wexford were my fifth great grandparents; Captain Nicholas and Julia Kennedy my fourth great grandparents; and Captain Terrence Kennedy and Mary Joy my great great grandparents; John Kennedy and Sophia Mahaney of Carbonear, Newfoundland were my paternal great grandparents
GRACE YOUNG, wife of Captain Nicholas Kennedy. Little is known about Grace except that she was pregnant when she left Wexford in 1807 on one of the Kennedy windjammers bound for New Bedford but that she gave birth at sea and the boat was put in at first port for her safety and that of the newborn Nicholas Kennedy 1807. That port was Harbor Grace, Conception Bay Newfoundland. Grace gave birth to a second son John Kennedy baptized in Harbor Grace on October 10, 1809. They settled in Crocker's Cove with the Kennedy families already there and Nicholas 1807 would in 1831 marry Julia Kennedy born 1808 to Terrence Kennedy and Mary Clarke. I have no birth, marriage, or death records for Nicholas Kennedy and Grace Young Kennedy of Wexford. They had 2 sons bapt. in Harbor Grace; unknown if they had older children
