We were living just south of SW 88th street and east of Krome Ave. in the direct path of Andrew's northern eye wall.
Everybody Duck! No Kidding!
The next morning a large section of Dade County Florida looked like this photo.
This is the Charles Deering estate restored and reopened in July 1998 six years after Hurricane Andrew and rebuilt at a cost of $12 million.
Charles Deering Estate Cutler Ridge,South Miami Florida
This is the Charles Deering Estate after Hurricane Andrew made landfall August 1992.
The interior of the estate.
A unique hall on the exterior porch has the roof inlaid with local shells.
At midnight the storm was expected to make landfall 60 miles north of us. At 2:00 a.m. I walked my dog without detection of even a light breeze. Shortly after 3:00 a.m. the power was out and the core was heading straight for us. The sound cannot even be described as a howl. Think of a subway station in NYC with every train passing through the station and your ear on the rail for 4 hours.
Like the knife thrower in a circus troupe Andrew spears with precision
We were married in 1990 at the estate just 2 years before Hurricane Andrew. We said our vows under the royal palm trees at the waters edge where the storm surge would reach nearly 17 feet above sea level in 1992.
This is where we were married in 1990 before Andrew hit this public park once an Estate owned by the Deering family is a familar spot to locals and where the opening scene of Miami Vice was shot with towering palm trees.
We were married at the boat basin at the estate where the storm surge was measured at nearly 17 feet above sea level.
Top wind speeds of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. A category 5 storm with gusts up to 175 mph.
