Bringing the cable ashore at Heart’s Content. Reaching for the looped end is Samuel
Canning, Chief Engineer. The man with the binoculars is Cyrus W. Field, a leading

The Greatest Ship Ever

.....Quote from
the book page 118 ( before the expected arrival of The Great
Eastern and "the Cable" in 1866).... quote "To make sure that the
visitors got plenty of strong drink, 2 men, Mr. Power of Carbonear
and Mr. Kennedy of Harbour Grace, opened 2 temporary grog shops.
One of the local publicans was so upset at the presence of the 2
outsiders, that when he met them one day, he politely reminded
them that there was just enough liquor trade for the 4 local
dispensers to make a few extra shillings.  Pointing his finger at
the two outsiders he said; " Wha' min by comin' oer yere, and
likkerin' up da poor men, 'lows yer mus' be mad af'er da Almighty
shillin'."
